Custom Cabinets & Built-Ins

I’m Brian, Hammerhead Renovation & Repair. I build and install shop-made cabinets that fit your house the way they’re supposed to—square, level, tight reveals, doors that close soft and straight. Kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, living room built-ins, office storage. If it needs a door, a drawer, or a clean face, I’ll make it.

Last month I measured a kitchen off Honea Egypt. House looked new, walls weren’t. One corner was out 3/8″ over 8 feet. We scribed the end panels and toe base so the face frames read dead plumb, not the drywall. That’s the difference between “installed” and “belongs here.”

What you’ll get

  • Boxes in 3/4″ cabinet-grade plywood (not particle board). Dadoed, glued, and screwed. Full 1/2″ backs so the case hangs solid.
  • Maple face frames or frameless if that’s your style. Doors and drawer fronts in paint-grade maple or stain-grade hardwoods (oak, maple, walnut, hickory).
  • Drawers in 5/8″ hardwood with dovetails, 1/4″ bottoms captured in a groove so they don’t pop.
  • Blum/Salice soft-close undermount slides and soft-close hinges. Standard. Not an add-on.
  • End skins, scribes, and fillers that hide drywall sins. Crown that returns clean. Toe bases that level the run before a single box goes in.
  • Finish sprayed in the shop: primer + 2K waterborne enamel for painted, or conversion varnish for stained. Hard, smooth, wipeable. No roller texture.

If it’s a garage cabinet or laundry where budget matters, I’ll spec a simpler build that still holds up. If a shortcut will bite you later, I’ll say so.

How I work

  • Walk-through & measure (45–60 min). We talk layout, trash pull-outs, tray dividers, spice pull-outs, appliance clearances. I check floors and walls for level and plumb so there are no surprises on install day.
  • Drawings & line-item quote. You’ll see elevations and a clear price: boxes, doors, drawers, hardware, finish, install. No “starting at.”
  • Shop build. Typical lead time 2–4 weeks depending on scope and finish. Doors are milled to your humidity and sit in the shop long enough not to move the second they see your AC.
  • Install. We protect floors, set toe bases, laser everything level, then hang the run. Doors and drawers get tuned after countertops go in (if counters are part of the job).
  • Blue-tape walk-through. Anything you flag, we fix before the last tool leaves the truck.

Built-ins and the “not quite kitchen” list

Media walls, bookshelves, window seats, mudroom lockers with a bench and cubbies, office drawer stacks that actually fit file folders. Same build quality, scaled to the room. I’ll anchor into studs, not just drywall plugs, and scribe to baseboards so it looks built-with-the-house, not rolled in yesterday.

Ballpark numbers (so you’re not guessing)

  • 48″ vanity: paint-grade $2.5–3.5k; stain-grade $3–4k
  • 8′ mudroom bench + lockers: paint-grade $4–6k; stain-grade $5–7k
  • 10′ living room built-in: paint-grade $6–9k; stain-grade $7–10k
  • Mid-size kitchen (about 25′ linear): paint-grade $14–22k; stain-grade $18–28k

Pull-outs, paneled ends, glass doors, crown, under-cabinet lighting—priced line by line so you decide where to spend.

A few rules I don’t break

  • Boxes acclimate in your home before install.
  • Doors and drawers get tuned at the end, not “good enough.”
  • I won’t stack cabinets on a wavy floor or paint over silicone and call it finished.
  • If weather or lead times shift, you hear it from me, not on the day I’m due to show up.

Quick answers (the stuff folks ask on the phone)

Bring a door or chip; we’ll hit it in the shop.

If your boxes are solid and the layout works, we can reface/paint and build new doors/drawers to save money.

Most kitchens are 2–4 weeks shop time, 2–4 days on site. Built-ins and vanities are faster.

Ready to start?

Call or text. I’ll come measure, show you options, and leave a clean, written quote. If it makes sense, we’ll put a date on the calendar and build something that belongs in your house—not just fits in it.
